My New Home

So I find myself standing in the airport in Nairobi , Kenya and the reality that I will be spending 4 months in that country didnt hit me yet. Around 20 hours of flying is never fun and I never felt happier to be standing in a long line waiting to get my visa. I stretched my legs and twisted my ankles and I knew something was wrong. My skin felt so tight around my ankles and I looked down at my feet to see that I had the fattest cankles ever. Seriously there were rolls of puffy skin taking over my ankles. I freaked out! All I could say was "oh no no no why is this happening??"...

Peace Like a River

So . . .         About these past few days in Kenya at our ministry site . . .                            Have been nothing like I was expecting (darn those expectations Jimmy!). After our 12 hour bus ride to our ministry site, and within 2 hours one of our girls started having a health issue that turned into a spiritual attack.  God gave Michael and I the wisdom needed to bring Truth and Light into this situation (and don’t worry- that girl is just fine!).  And then not...

The Gentle Spirit of a Servant

Irene is a happy, always smiling, fun-loving 19 year old girl. She is one of the friends I’ve met while living here in Bishop Basuru’s house in Mpeketoni, Kenya. She lives in a mud hut not more than 5 feet away from the cement house that we’re living in. The other night I was walking around our little yard when I saw Irene bending over a boiling pot, so I walked over to her to see what she was doing…sadly I couldn't figure out how to post the two pictures I had for this blog, so hopefully you can get a good picture of what I'm saying through my words. ...

This Is Africa

Originally, I had planned to write this blog about how much I have grown and changed as a result of a teammate being sick, and while it was amazing how much my prayer life, and my spiritual life in general has drastically changed and strengthened, I feel the need to vent about something else. This morning we visited a hospital in Mpeketoni and let me just say that I could not believe that I was standing in a hospital…there was no air conditioning or fans, no medical equipment that I could see, no nurses or doctors, and the smell of human feces and the stench of death and disease...

The simplicity of a ball

Today was our first day of door to door ministry, or more accurately titled, hut to hut ministry. As I walked the dusty roads of Mpeketoni I wasn’t sure what to expect. The sticky weather was starting to get to me and the smell of burning trash wasn’t helping the matter. On I went though, awaiting what God, who just loves to put me in uncomfortable situations, was planning. Seeing a group of huts ahead, my team and I veered toward them. As I looked up, my eyes met with one of the most intimidating men I have ever seen. It wasn’t his appearance that gave me this...

Understanding God’s Expectations

So it has been a while since the last time I blogged and I have so many stories to tell. We arrived in Mpeketonion Sunday after a 12 hour bus ride. The bus was so interesting and something I had never experienced until this trip. After arriving in Mpeketoni, we met Bishop and moved our things into the home in which we are staying. The people here are so nice and we even have flushable squatty potties and showers (we get to take one everyday.) Beginning our ministry in Mpeketoni, we started with door to door evangelism. It was so nice to work with my team mates in spreading the word of...
