What a little light can do.

“What in the world have I gotten myself into?”   We flew into Nairobi Airport at 8:00pm on August the 31st. After carrying around all of my belongings on my back around the Nairobi airport, we got loaded up into our contact's vans and headed into the unknown. After driving around in the dark for a while with hardly any lights guiding us along, we stopped at a 24 hour store. At this point, I'm not even sure what I'm even doing here. I'm sick, tired, and just want to lay down. We climb back into our vans and begin the hour and a half drive to our new home. Well,...

Wait…I’m white??

The trip to Busia was long, and adventurous. When we finally arrived to Nairobi, we stayed at a beautiful hostel made up of tents. There were two campfires, and we were given the best meal of the trip so far. On the bus to Busia, it was bumpy and long but praise the Lord I slept almost the whole way. The entire team was in much need of sleep. We receieved a warm welcome by a couple of pastors at the border of Uganda where we were dropped off. As we waited for a car to pick us up, we heard the word "miszungu" all over. We were prepared for that word, it means white person essentially,...

Being a True Man of God

Being away from home for even a couple weeks has taught me a lot about who I am. It has helped me to step into the potential God has for me. It means not staying silent when it would be easy to do so. It means following the Lord's voice no matter what. It means encouraging and building up my teammates when they feel down. Its means that God tells me who I am. It means that I dont walk in the ways of my past, but that I live in God's present glory. This past week, we as a team have done hospital ministry everyday from 4 to 6pm. We have prayed over people of all ages and all kinds of...

And so it begins.

While running through security at the Kansas City airport, the reality of this trip finally hit me. No, not that I’m late for my first of four flights (off to a great start) but my 9 months of preparation were over. I had been praying about this day, this summer, and my teammates since I was accepted last fall and the day was finally here! I was headed to my first stop on the way to Busia, Kenya -Training Camp in Georgia. Now you may be wondering “Wait, what are you doing in Georgia? I thought you were already in Kenya.” Well, at the beginning of each launch the participants,...

IDP Camp! AKA best day of ministry so far!

I thought my heart broke when we went to the tribes in the bush of Africa. And it did break over the things that we saw and experienced there. But that heartbreak was nowhere near what I felt when we visited the IDP camp this week. We went to hand out food that our team purchased. When we arrived, the people staying there were in the middle of their church service. We were invited to sing three songs (nothing new there :P),as well as give a testimony and a sermon. After this, we played with the kids and began to hand out the food to the adults. We were able to provide one small bag of cornmeal,...

Meet my best friend, Isabel

We have been back in our home base of Kijabe for the past week and it’s been awesome! Most  of the team was sent to work in the AIC (African Inland Church) hospital, but two volunteers were needed to work in the preschool nearby. Since I love kids and nearly pass out at the sight of blood, my hand happily shot up at this opportunity. As the teacher introduced me to the small group of 3-5 year olds, I was greeted in unison: “Hello, how are you today?” … Good, how are you? -“Fine, thank you.”. Within minutes we were all best friends and I was being summoned...
