Is This Really About The Children?

Our ministry here in Busia is quite different from what it was the first 2 months. Here, our schedule changes frequently and you never know what you might be doing. We mostly do door to door and hospital visits, but a couple weeks ago we ended up helping at a children's conference that was being held at our church. We basically helped Chef Lucas cook breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. We cooked a lot of mandazi and chiptai. Cut up who knows how many vegetables and it was quite fun!   Inbetween helping serve and cooking and preparing...

GOD was one of us

There is a lyric from a song that you might know…”What if God was one of us?”  I already know the answer to that question because it is really not a question at all.  God was one of us, in the form of Jesus, God came down from heaven and spent time here on Earth as a human.  This past week, we celebrated the day of Jesus crucifixion (Good Friday) and the day of His resurrection (Easter)…we don’t need to question whether God was one of us because He was…history attests to the fact that there was really a person named Jesus who lived in...

GOD wants YOU!

On April 17th, 2011, I got the honor and privilege to preach at Deliverance Church, our ministry partner here in Busia.  As I was praying on Saturday, God gave me the words to say…what follows are the words that I wrote down after that encounter. “God, You are more than a heavenly ATM…we aren’t just supposed to do to You when we want to be blessed, when we’ve got a problem and need Your help, but also when life is  good, just to talk to You, just to experience You.  I have come to learn that You desire a relationship with us, and just like a...

A BIG Cat

Normally, April 15th is a day we as Americans remember because our taxes are due…but from now on, April 15th will also mark the day that I got to do something that very few people probably ever get to do.  You see on April 15th, 2011 I got to pet the fastest land animal, a cheetah, at a game park in Kisumu, a city about 2 hours away from where we are in Busia.  While we were touring the game park (it looked more like a zoo), our guide asked us if we would like to pet the cheetahs; so for 300 Kenyan Shillings (about 4 US dollars), we each got to pet the cheetahs.  The...

A Life Resurrected

Her situation is desperate, and so today she decided to commit suicide. … She was walking through the town and saw a tree.  She had lost all hope, and decided that was the tree she would hang herself on.  She went to a shop and bought some rope, and was going to wait until night to do it.  While waiting, something led her down the road.  She wound up at Deliverance Church, the church we are partnering with here in Kenya.  She wrapped the rope around her waist, put her dress over it, and walked inside. … This afternoon I was in the middle of an...

27 Bites on my Right Elbow

27 Bites on my Right Elbow       The 27 bites on my right elbow testify to the fact that a mosquito net with holes in it is less than effective. My sleeping pad has been to over 15 countries, and has seen better days.  The airflow nozzle leaks air throughout the night, and so most mornings I wake up to a deflated sleeping pad and a stiff back. We lose power every night for a few hours (sometimes the whole night).  It usually happens while in the middle of cooking dinner, and so we have to grab headlights and switch from...
