Being a True Man of God

Being away from home for even a couple weeks has taught me a lot about who I am. It has helped me to step into the potential God has for me. It means not staying silent when it would be easy to do so. It means following the Lord's voice no matter what. It means encouraging and building up my teammates when they feel down. Its means that God tells me who I am. It means that I dont walk in the ways of my past, but that I live in God's present glory. This past week, we as a team have done hospital ministry everyday from 4 to 6pm. We have prayed over people of all ages and all kinds of...

Break My Heart For What Breaks Yours.

Everyday this past week we were blessed with the opportunity to visit the local hospital here in Busia. I have prayed the past few months for God to prepare my heart for everything I may encounter while in Kenya but nothing could have prepared me for this. My heart raced before I entered the first unit and, of course, my group was assigned the children’s ward. As I walked into the open and poorly lit room, I felt a heavy burden lay upon me. The nursing student inside of me immediately started pointing out everything I wanted to fix and do for the patients. Some beds had up to 4...

Africa is hope.

This first week of ministry was awesome.  It was very emotional but super encouraging.  We have been working in the schools and the little african children have stolen my heart.  They have such sweet smiles and have a irreplaceable joy.  We also had the opportunity to work in the hospital.  We went into the children’s, female, male, and surgical ward to pray over the sick and wounded.  It was very emotional because I kept wondering why God chose these people to get sick when they already have nothing. Why not me?  There was one lady that had...

Real life story: I pick favorites

It's true, I've always been the kind of person who picks favorites. I have a favorite teacher from highschool, a favorite professor from college, a favorite pet, and now Kenya is my favorite country. It's completely amazing here. Last week we saw a lot of the ministry we will be doing here, and I'm loving it. We wake up around 5 every monring and walk to the chruch to pray from 6 to 7. We are normally late though, so it's more like 6:20 to 7, but I think God understands the struggle with a 23 person team and getting anywhere on time in Africa. After we...

Hospital Ministry: week 1

This past week we have been doing hospital visits in the afternoon from 4 to 6. When we started on Tuesday it was a brand new experience for me. My challenges were knowing what to say, accepting that I cannot do anything on my own because God is in control and will chose to heal to not to heal. I also struggled with feeling not needed because I am inexperienced and I don't speak swahili.  I also struggled with the ability to read the facial expressions of the Africans, my first day I didn’t see any happiness or hope in their faces, even when one woman asked Christ into her...

New… Again, and Again, and Again

The other day God gave me an incredible revelation: Just because you are struggling today with something you struggled with one year ago does not mean you are taking steps backwards. It means He is making you new… again. He is always making you new. You were new a year ago. You were new six months ago. You were new last month. And yesterday. And now you are new today. God always has something more for us. A deeper intimacy. A greater mercy. Bigger eyes to see. More words to speak. God takes us to places where He knows we will be stretched and where He knows we will grow....
