What Are We Thinking America?

Dirt floors, mud walls being held up by sticks and grass, no air conditioner, no musical instruments other than a drum, no cushioned pews or seats, and a small room packed with sixty people…and God still shows up to rock some peoples worlds. I want to ask the question, “What are we thinking America?” We have multimillion dollar churches packed with stadium seating, a full choir and worship band, all the lights, sounds, and special effects of a rock concert, and AIR CONDITIONING! We have all of this stuff and yet God hardly ever moves to the magnitude that He wants to.  This past Sunday, I experienced God in a way I never have before…and it was without all of the “fixins” we have in the U.S. Stuck in a small mud hut with sixty people I thought to myself, “How can God even begin to move here? I mean look at this place…there is no choir, or band, or power point…the pastor isn’t even being that funny!!”

The service began with singing praises without instruments, then testimonies, and lastly the word of God was shared…and then God came in like a rushing wind and His presence was among us. The people here literally rely on God for everything, and I believe because of this He shows up in bigger ways than He does back home. It seems to me that God reaches more people, His presence is felt in a deeper way, and more lives and families are changed for God in Kenya than in the U.S. I know there are AMAZING churches in the U.S that are reaching people left and right for Jesus. I know that there are followers of Christ that are giving themselves fully to bring the love of Jesus to friends and family…but…for the most part I believe we are missing the bigger picture as a nation founded on Christian beliefs. I believe we are missing the fact that it is not about the showmanship on Sunday mornings or the coffee and donuts, or even how well the preacher brings the word of God.  It’s about the relationship with God inside of us and the communion with Christ within our heart. When we have this communion we have the burden to share others of the amazing love of Christ. So I want to ask all of you back home in the U.S this simple question…”What are we thinking America?”
