The Maasai..

We headed out Feb 3rd at about 10am. After stopping at the market and driving though dirt roads and countless pot holes, we finally arrived in the land of the Maasai Tribe. It was hot. It was dry. No running water. No electricity. No showers, and a squatty potty for a toilet. Flies covered everything. Flies covered everyone. I didnt know what to think. I didnt know what to feel. I guess i was in a state of shock. How was i suppose to live here the next 6 days?

Then God opens your eyes and helps  you destroy the the complete selfishness that wants to take over. You begin to remember why you came. You begin to remember why you are here. You stop looking inward towards yourself and you start looking through the eyes Jesus gave you. You begin to realize what  Psalms 34:18 and Matthew 5:3 really means. God is near to the brokenhearted and God saves the crushed in spirit. The poor in spirit are truly blessed and theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. We are here for to spread the love of Jesus, to build a relationship, and to share the gospel with anyone and everyone we meet.

The Maasai Christian community in the area welcomed us in with open arms. Even though there was a language barrier, they did not hesitate a bit to fellowship with us as brothers and sisters in Christ. With their help we got the opportunity to visit most of the houses within walking distance. For three days we walked miles from house to house. When we met followers of Christ, we prayed and encouraged one another with scripture. We just enjoyed each others company. We shared the gospels with everyone. We shared our testimonies with the unsaved and did all we could to plant seeds in their hearts. We loved them and just shared with them how important a relationship with Jesus really is.

One particular house visit will forever be in my heart and in my prayers. As we walked up to this house, Jenn, a young mother no more than 16 years old with her baby on her back, came in from working in the field to greet us. Her baby was half naked, crying, covered with flies, and more than likely was hungry and thirsty. You could look into Jenn’s eyes and see the pain, sadness, and the weight of just everything she was carrying. She looked a little scared and hopeless. She knows who Jesus is, but she was not a follower and a true believer of Christ. We began to just talk with her and shared the gospel. The following verses spoke to Jenn’s heart and God began to move.

‘For I consider the sufferings of this present time not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be revealed to us’ Romans 8:18

‘Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you’
Psalm 33:20-22

Something holding Jenn back and weighing her down was released. There was a different look to her eyes. A glimpse of hope sparked in her Spirit. Tears started to fill her eyes. She wanted to be saved. A girl in our group named Vicky could speak her language and began to lead Jenn through the prayer of repentance. Jenn began to weep even more, and I couldnt hold back my own tears. This was something real. The holy spirit moved and Jenn found a hope in Jesus Christ. I pray that God will continue to move in her life. I pray that she never puts her hope in the things of this world, but she will continue to grow in Christ and grow more and more everyday. I pray for God to use her to change other peoples lives just like God changed hers.
