I’ve Got An Itch.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to travel. Visiting family in the summer time, going away to Young Life camp and spending weeks on Summer Staff have always been the highlights of my life. Though in the past couple years, I felt an itch for more than a few days away. And not just to a state with luxurious beaches, but to Africa. This itch started with my nursing career so I could help people all over the world. Medicine is universal, the human body fascinates me, everyone gets sick and I love to serve – it all added up perfectly. So I chose my nursing program and got...

It’s the final countdownnnn

I know, cheesy title, I apologize. This past week we spent most of our time in Kitale at a place called the Challenge Farm. This place takes in street kids and gives them a home. They make them quit sniffing glue cold turkey and constantly gives them candy and other things to eat to keep their minds off the glue. It takes about two months for the new children to get used to the schedule they have a ready to start going to school. They have a K-8 school on the grounds, and the highschoolers either walk to school each day or go to boarding school. It was such a blessing to our team to be able...

The Adventure Never Ends

So, Africa. I don’t even know where to begin. This trip has been absolutely amazing! I seriously love everything about this place and these people. Not to say that it doesn’t have its rough times, but the good times completely outweigh the hard. Everything here is beautiful. The sky is always showing Gods glorious creativity and the African trees are stunning! I love the Kenyan accents and the Children’s big white smiles! I love waking up at 5:30 every morning to go spend an hour with Jesus as I watch the sunrise and I love walking the dirt roads along side all the random...

What a Week

I don’t even know what to say about this week; all I know is that it’s been one of the best yet. I have never felt so alive or so engaged in the ministry than I did this week.      Wednesday I went to the orphanage and when the kids came out of class for break several ran up to me calling me by my name and calling me teacher. They remembered me from the previous week when I got to teach their class. Then they started telling me new stuff they had learned. While they were all just sitting around me the word mzungu (white person) started coming...

I love because He first loved me

Last Wednesday we went to Mama's orphanage and it was a goodbye party for a woman who is helping them build a school. We ate food with the kids and then we went into the cafeteria to dance and eat dessert and sing. We all sat and the kids are in our laps hanging out, some were sleeping. They had music playing were setting up some cake for everyone to eat. The cake was round and in America it would feed about 10 people a good amount of cake. There are over 130 kids in this place ranging from the ages of 3 months to early twenties. That is a lot of kids with very little cake. They sang...

Wearing White in Africa

Since being here in Kenya I've learned that there's a few things you just don't do. Some of these things have come from personal experience and some from the experiences of my teammates. For the pride of those involved I won't name any names… Here is my incomplete list of things you should not do in Africa: 1. NEVER, I repeat never walk into a squatty barefoot. This is just an all around bad idea. Especially when your entire team is sitting there watching you. Just gross. 2. Don't wear short-shorts out in public.. unless of course you're hoping to find yourself...
