Africa is Insane

This past week has been so good for me. I had good Jesus time, good ministry time, and good team time! Tuesday I didn’t feel so good so I stayed back, but Wednesday I went to the deaf school and it was so good. I learned some Kenya sign language, got a sign name (letter ‘m’ by the corner of my mouth) and met an awesome girl, Anna, from North Carolina who has been working at this school for a year and a half. We didn’t do much ministry with the kids that day, but I really enjoyed talking to Anna and getting to know her. Hopefully she’ll be hanging out with us this week before we leave.
Thursday I went to the orphanage for ministry and that was good for me too. We didn’t get to hang out with the kids this day either, but I got to teach for a little while. I wanted to do the Bible story about Daniel in the lion’s den, but the teacher was adamant I taught out of their book. I went over feelings and body part functions and family, and I finally made it to the Bible and I got to ask them about church and Jesus. Then they sang me the cutest song about Jesus before I left for lunch.
Friday I did door to door and it was also good. God lead us to the right house and I really enjoyed it. There was a deaf lady who Morgan was able to sign with and learn from, and a sweet older lady who talked to us a good bit. We stayed for about 2 hours before we left there.
Saturday I did street kid ministry. We went to the soccer fields and while some played soccer, I hung out with the kids on the side line. Most of these kids sniff glue and I could hardly breathe when some kids were really close because the smell of glue was so strong. But after the game we went back to the church. Michelle, Katie, and I taught about Paul, God’s love and forgiveness, and ways we should act and show God’s love. I’ve taught them once before and I love teaching them. But that was all for ministry and I really enjoyed it.
We had Lunch Hour Prayer every afternoon and Revival every night. It was insane. Absolutely crazy. African revivals are not like American revivals. For one, they start after ours back home would have already ended and they last til around 11. I have never danced so hard for Jesus in my life and it was so much fun!! I never understood the dancing part of the song that goes “I am free to run, I am free to dance, I am free to live for you, I am free” until I came here. Best thing ever. After the message, God worked so powerful. It’s crazy because I’ve been asking for God to show me who He is and different parts of Him and lately He’s been revealing how powerful He is and it’s incredible. I’ve heard about healings and people falling out in the spirit and demons being cast out but I never actually knew them as true. I didn’t not believe in it, but I guess I just hadn’t thought about it enough. So Tuesday I was in for a big surprise at revival. People were falling and one woman was screaming and another thrashing around while people held her arms. It was intense and scary, but something about it felt right. The next nights I knew what to expect and was praying along with everyone for God to work some miracle. The last night when the pastor called a woman up front to pray for her because he sensed a demon present, I didn’t just stare with wide eyes as I had the first night, I thanked God for delivering her and showing his power and working. WOW GOD! We serve a powerful God who is alive and working and literally fighting for us. He is so good!
Yesterday we went to Kisumu and it was also very fun. We ate at a hotel that looked like a resort and had American food and milkshakes. Then we went to the Masai market and all the stuff for sale was incredible. Also very overpriced and I am not the best barterer in the world so I spent more shillings for things than I should have, but it’ll be ok. When we left there we went to Lake Victoria and it was really awesome. We could only see a part of it, but it was nice to get to see. The matatu ride back was the only thing I wasn’t a fan of. African drivers are already crazy enough, but give us a 2 hour drive in the dark, on wet, terrible roads, with people and bikers on the sides, when the driver has a lead foot. Makes for quite an interesting ride home. But I still wouldn’t trade being here for anything. I’ve also been getting super hyper in the evenings, or slap happy as one of my friends calls it, and it makes everything about Africa so much better.
Let me just say that I love Africa, no matter how crazy things may get.
