Unexpected Love

I may or may not love Kenya. Okay, I do. I came on this this trip thinking I would like it but not love this place. At first, I was not sure about it. I didn’t even really like it. The first couple weeks we stayed at the Highway Motel while we finished fixing up the school we are staying in now. When I thought of motel, I thought of showers, toilets, wifi, etc. When we got there it was not what I expected. The food was not the best. The showers were cold. The toilets were different. We had one outlet to a room. I thought it was rough. Then we moved to the school. We now have bucket...

What is Church?

To most Americans when you think of church you think about a building. The place you go every Sunday to see your friends, to hear the pastor preach, to sing some worship songs. Whatever you think, church is often described as a place. But today, I discovered a new meaning of church. One with no pastor. No instruments. No building. Two weeks ago we were out walking the streets and talking to people we saw, and we met a sweet woman named Ann. She invited us into her small house, served us chai (the drink of choice in Kenya) and shared her story with us. She told us about her children, her...

Faith that can move mountains

One thing I have learned on this trip, is that I have absolutely no faith. One thing the bible teaches us is that we don’t need a huge amount of faith, just faith as small as a mustard seed, and you can move mountains. A good friend of mine showed me that verse when I was a freshman, and of course I interpreted it as “if I have faith that I can make it on American Idol, I will”, or “if I have faith that I will become Americas Next Top Model, I will” but four years later, neither one has happened and I’m not too torn up about it. I am instead, across the...

I’ve Fallen in Love

That's right. After just one day with this boy, he has captured my heart. His name is Samuel and he is three years old. I met him last Tuesday when some of my team and I went to an orphanage called Valley Light Children Home here in Maai Mahiu. When we first walked in, there were seven adorable little children under the age of five sitting in swings and quietly playing. I walked over to Samuel and tried pushing him in the swing and tickling him – anything to get a smile. But not only did I not get a smile, I got no reaction from him whatsoever. He had these big sad brown eyes that...

The Love that Never Fails

I’m falling in love. I know what your thinking. She’s crazy. She’s only 19. Love? She can’t know what that is. But I’m learning. Let me backtrack a little. I’ve always known the idea of love. And as much as some of the people back home might not like the idea, I knew I had a creator that loved me immensely. No matter how much doubt was instilled in me; from family, friends, myself. Something was in the back of my head, wrestling to be brought to the surface. My head was a war zone, a constant back and forth. Could this be true? It can’t. “But...

My days in Busia

Wow it's kind of hard to believe it has been a month and a half since I was in America. It has seemed like the days here go by so quickly yet, the weeks go by slowly, it's hard to explain but that's just African time for ya. My trip has definitely been filled with different feelings in different moments, there has been times when all I've wanted to do is go home, and then there has been times when I've never wanted to leave because this place felt like home. Busia itself is hard to explain, it's bigger than a town but no where near the size of a city, there is trash...
