George

So my dad has always wanted to name something George- whether the car, one of our cats, but never has gotten the chance. You see there is me, my mom, and my sister, and let's just say he never had a chance J So dad this blog is for you!!! One of our neighbor's here has 4 kittens and they are the cutest thing ever- or so I thought until the other day. One morning we got back from door to door and there was a kitten/cat sitting on our porch area. At first it would not come near us but only play ribbon and once in a while rub itself on our feet.  ...

The Gift of No Athletic Ability

Sometimes our ministry falls through for the day or part of it- as we say :This is Africa J (you learn to be quite flexible and go with the flow). A lot of these kids are into playing soccer so we sometimes make our own ministry by finding an open field and just playing soccer with a bunch of kids. Normally it turns into who can beat the white -lol and kids love it! As many of you know, I am not one for playing soccer or any sports for that matter, so while everyone else is running around getting all sweaty and tired, I get to sit down and play with the kids (mostly the girls...

Is This Really About The Children?

Our ministry here in Busia is quite different from what it was the first 2 months. Here, our schedule changes frequently and you never know what you might be doing. We mostly do door to door and hospital visits, but a couple weeks ago we ended up helping at a children's conference that was being held at our church. We basically helped Chef Lucas cook breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. We cooked a lot of mandazi and chiptai. Cut up who knows how many vegetables and it was quite fun!   Inbetween helping serve and cooking and preparing...

4/11/11-4/17/11

Have you ever gone a week without sleep? Team Kenya has. Where we live we are surrounded by neighbors, i really enjoyed that until about a week ago….on one sunday evening our neigbor lost her husband around 12:00 at night. When she realized he had died she burst out in tears sobbing. I felt awful for the women. I heard her cries until mid morning. I asked a neighbor boy what had happened exactly…..he told me her husband had just been sick for a long time and his death was expected. I'm sure that doesn't make it any easier, but it helped me to know how to pray for him...

Gap-Toothed Smile

I Left My Boys Behind

I have been struggling when it comes down to writting this blog, I cannot find the words to share this story that has dug holes in my heart. However my unworthy words will have to make due because this story needs to be shared, needs to be talked about, and needs to be heard. Children have always had a strong pull on me, so the idea of coming to Kenya and not falling madly in love with all the beautiful kids would have been highly unrealistic. In Mpeketoni, we had children who belonged to the women that cooked in our kitchen coming and going daily. I found myself surrounded by little...
