In 2007 riots broke out in Kenya due to a fixed election. People’s houses were burned to the ground, people were murdered and driven our of thier homes. They had no place to go so they relocated in the middle of the valley about 30 minutes from Kijabe. Today, we went to the Displaced people. There were over 200 UNICEF tents and this is all that these people have. Many have been there for years waiting for the government to help them.
When we got there, we joined them in fellowship. I had the opportunity to share some of my story with them. There were probably over 200 people there all gathered under this African tree. We sang and prayed and then we gave them bags of Ugali (corn mush, that looks like flour). After, we had the opportunity to visit some of the tents and hear some of their tragic stories. The first tent me and Liz went to was a tent where 13 people slept. Cecilia was 13 years old and she took us to here she lived. She was the cutest thing i have ever seen. She was s othankful to God for protecting her faimly and she was so encouraging and full of life. Liz taught them to say “Welcome to my crib!” and afterward i got a picture of all of them in front of their “crib!”
We met a man who was blind becasue during the riots they has sprayed tear gas in his eyes. He lived with his son and was still praising Jesus. These people amaze me with the faith that they have.
We met one lady, named Jen. She had 7 kids that she was taking care of. She got seperated from her husband and now she doesn’t even know if he is alive. She was one of the most strong women i have ever seen. You could tell that all of her strength came from the Lord. Her tent was so organized and put together and she was so thanful that we had come. She wanted us to pray that she would have the money for her kids to go to school, and she needed to find some way to get KSH 500 (which is about $7) to pay for her son’s exam by Tuesday. Fortunately Denise brought her wallet and was able to give the mom the money. She was so thankful. She gave us all hugs and kisses and she said prayed that God would bless us with abundance. Bless us with abundance? Man, i am telling you, thier faith is so strong. Right at that moment, that woman had a glimpse of hope and the kingdom of God was brought to kenya. so, you can call it coincidence that we happened to be at this camp at this time or you can call it the presence and the work of God. I prefer the latter.
