A Father to the fatherless

Tomorrow is our last day of ministry in Busia. I still haven't fully come to grips with that fact. These past 2 months in Busia have gone by faster than any 2 months of my life. Granted, I still have 2 weeks left in Kenya, but they  won't be spent in the place that has been my home for this past summer. God has definitely chosen the last few weeks in Kenya to break my heart the most. This past Saturday was our last day doing street kids ministry here in Busia. Every Saturday since we've been here we play soccer with them and make them lunch at the church. I remember...

You Alone Can Rescue

This week we did ministry going door to door, went to the deaf school, and orphanage. The first day we went door to door and it was a bit discouraging. We struggled with conversation. Every door we knocked on whoever opened the door kindly welcomed us into their home, but they either didn’t seem interested in talking to us or conversation just didn’t really go anywhere. Wednesday was much better though. I realized that without God guiding our steps and words we were useless and our efforts were in vain. It was much better. I prayed throughout each visit for God to guide our...

Immaculate

There's a little girl that's almost always outside of the church when we're there. She's different from the other children. I think she may be autistic but the other kids just say that there's something wrong with her brain. She doesn't communicate when you try to talk to her. Instead she just parrots everything that you ask her. At first I found this quality to be frustrating and realized that I had little patience with her. But now she's probably one of my favorite kids that I've met in Busia. She always has a huge smile on her...

Talk about a broken heart

It's been a pretty crazy week including a trip to Kisumu on Monday (the reason this blog is just now being written). We were able to leave Busia for the first time since we got here and go to Kisumu to eat lunch at a place that has actual ice cream (this was big for our team), and more importantly the Massai market where most of us bought all of our souvenirs. This past week was filled with trips to the orphanage, soccer with the street kids, door to door ministry, and for me, a bit of heartbreak. I have been praying for God to break me while I have been here, because before this past...

Crazy week

God works in mysterious ways.  He works in ways no one thought possible.  He uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He is a God of miracles and still continues to do them.  I want to tell you about my exciting, crazy, and unbelievable week of ministry.     Our team had the opportunity to be apart of a week long revival, lead by a pastor from Uganda.  Many people assume that African churches are hot and loud but that doesn't even begin to explain African revivals.  You sweat.  Its hot….EXTREMELY, hot.  Its so loud that when...

Hearing through the static.

As a small group of my teammates and I walked down the side streets of Busia, I heard a faint voice behind us calling out to get our attention. Not bothering to turn and look, I assumed it was yet another child wanting us to stop and play with them or shake their hand. Plus, we were deep in conversation so by ignoring the child he would get the hint and stop, right? Wrong. The little unrelenting voice was still there trailing behind us.                 I eventually turned around and my gaze met with a small boy...
