Freddie and Felix
Freddie is a 4 year old little boy who lives behind the Bishop's house. He has come to visit us everyday since we arrived. At first he came alone, sometimes rolling and running after the bicycle tire that he plays with. But lately he has had a little shadow named Felix. Felix is Freddie's 2 year old brother. At first Felix would use caution when approaching us and look at us with a questioning expression, but slowly he is warming up to us.
Today he fell asleep in Melissa's arms.
Freddie is a mischievous and curious little boy. He climbs walls, does cart wheels through the living room, throws rocks at monkeys, and keeps a beat like nobody's business.
He's like the Justin Bieber of Mpeketoni.
Most days he is wearing his warn and dirty mickey mouse PJ's with the holes in the elbows.
But he is always wearing a smile.
Freddie and Felix's mother cannot afford to send them to school. They live without running water. They live without electricity. They live without a bathroom. They live in a one room apartment with an 8 year old sister named Sarah and their mother who often leaves them alone at night and pursues prostitution for money. Their mother just had another baby boy named Elvis who is around 2 or 3 weeks old.
When I play with Freddie and Felix I pray for the compassion of Christ to fill my heart. I pray for God to pour out his love through me and my team on to these poor, dirty, beautiful children.
For without Jesus and his compassion I would be nothing but a poor, dirty child myself.
