From Tuesday to Sunday my team and our contact facilitated a crusade in Mhamarani. For all of you that don’t know, a crusade is simply open air preaching. You choose a spot in a city, set up, and basically hold a church service right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the area.
However, this crusade was very different from the others in past weeks because it was clustered with drunk men. What a sight to see, full grown men interpretive dancing to the praise and worship songs being sung. Seriously, I think it could have made a 60 year old woman who has denounced dancing because it is “from the devil” fall on her face with laughter.
Beyond all the hilarity from the “dog sliding his butt across the carpet” dance moves being done, my protective side also came about. For some reason drunkards seem magnetically drawn to white females. I’m not kidding, it’s like a tractor beam! So as they awkwardly scurried towards their next female mzungu (white face) dance partner I received the heroic job of standing between alcohol breath and completely creeped out sister in Christ (God, I better get a crown for that in Heaven…lol…joking I promise!).
As my new drunk friend “Beyonce shook” to my right, I couldn’t help but smile when my eyes meet his. There was something innocent in his eyes, deep within, something crying out for help. When I got past the stench of alcohol and mangled appearance, it became very visible. Whether it was the love of Jesus or my insanity making it debut, I couldn’t help but dance with the man. He would show me a move, then I him and it got to be quite fun. I actually don’t think you could have wiped the smile off my face if you tried.
It’s funny to think that in the back of God’s mind, in the time of my creation, God was already ordaining this awkward, yet wonderful encounter! It’s also funny to think that this moment was one of the many reason’s God brought me to Kenya. Ha!, who would have thought.
I’ve done and seen some great things in these past two months! I’ve led God’s people to Christ, I’ve loved on orphan’s, and as much as I am embarrassed to say, I danced like a lunatic with a drunkard!
