Hi momma and daddy! I am safe, eating well, getting good sleep, and LOVING LOVING LOVING LOVING Africa!
Today, we went to a school and it was just one big room with four different forms (or classes) in it. TONS of smiling kids reaching up at us! I told the people we are working with that I wanted to be a teacher and that I am going to school for that. When we got there the kids were singing “Welcome! Welcome!”. We started playing with them, singing, and introducing ourselves. One man, his name is Omosh, is the guy from ICC that is taking us everywhere and he turned to me and said “Do you have a bible study ready? A sermon? A lesson? It’s time for you to put on your teaching shoes.” Nervousness shot through my whole body and I started making excuses but then I felt a huge peace and just opened up to Matthew. I found a story when Jesus heals his mother-in-law and how he takes on all our sickness and diseases. I started teaching the kids a lesson about how Jesus is a healer and that if you ask him to heal you he will. It was THE best feeling ever to be in front of a bunch of African children looking up at me wide eyed and engaged. I then took one of the forms and started teaching them the days of the week and math problems. The children here are so well behaved and quiet…I definately want to teach here at some point in my life because American children have attitudes and here they are so grateful. I absolutely loved it and it just confirmed the calling to be a teacher. Then I went to the back of the school to a little room where there were two women cooking chapati (chapati is kind of like a tortilla). I rolled up my sleeves and told them to teach me. There were very few words exchanged but after about 5 min. I got the hang of it! I wrote down the recipe and I can’t wait to make them when I get home! I am learning so much and God is really transforming me into a woman after His heart. It has only been one week and I am already changed so much! There are so many stories to tell! But don’t worry – I am writing everything down! I am going to have to buy another journal because I write so much!
Funny things:
1. The World Cup is HUGE here…of course. I have been watching almost every single match on a TV at the Church…except the USA game. =[
2. The Africans have started to call me AJ without me even telling them to…or Jo.
3. Sub Sandwhiches are junk food to Kenyans.
4. I had a sandwhich for breakfast and fries for lunch one day.
5. The showers are absolutely freezing. I have never felt anything so cold on my body.
6. Claire plucked my eyebrows the other night.
7. I am learning SO MUCH Swahili. I LOVE IT.
I am having so much fun and really am learning so much. This has definately been the experience of a lifetime. Thank you mom and dad!
