The MZUNGU’s are here!!!

Well, we made it to africa! It took a long 30 something hours on planes and in airports, but we finally made it. Africa is so beautiful. Our first 2 days were spent in Nairobi in the most amazing hostel in the world. Its called the Milimani Backpacker, and I love it. Our days in Nairobi were limited to the hostel, and coffee shop down the street because of safety reasons. Interesting fact about Africa, when you order a coke they ask you if you want it hot or cold. I didn’t know people would actually choose to drink hot coke? I enjoyed every single minute of our time in Nairobi, and honestly I was in no hurry to leave. We ate African food for the first time, which was actually very delicious, and we mostly just relaxed and enjoyed a nice vacation before the real work began in Busia.

The bus ride from Nairobi to Busia took 10 hours. I sat next to Nate, who rolled his eyes and groaned a little when he saw that we were sitting together, haha. He pressured me into taking a dramamine (probably so I would sleep and not talk to him the whole time, haha) which had little effect on me, but I was so glad to be awake when we started driving by the Great Rift Valley. It was the most beautiful view I have ever seen in my life. Then, we drove through the valley, and many different towns. I was worried before the bus ride that there would be no bathroom stops because that is what our leaders told us to expect, but thankfully we made three stops where we were able to use actual western toilets. Overall it was a very wonderful bus ride, thank you God!

When we got to Busia we were greeted like celebrities. There were lots of people staring and waving and hugging and calling out “Mzungu!, Mzungu!” which means foreigner or white person in swahili. It was very cool, and it still is. The children treat us like we are the most amazing things they ever laid eyes on. We met Pastor Gideon and his assistant pastor, Pastor Steve. We were fed lots of food and really enjoyed time at Deliverance Church. We have a squatty potty at our house instead of a toilet (which is a hole in the ground). Not that much fun to use, but I am very appreciative because Pastor gave us the best place to stay in all of Busia, and we have a nice clean toilet compared to others around here. We have showers that work off of rain water, they are cool and refreshing to say the least.
