Hiiiii! To my friends and family that is reading this: I’m alive 🙂 I’m doing great and loving Africa still! The Lord has taught me alot and I’m excited to get back to America and to put all of this in to action. Only a few more weeks…crazy! It’s been a while since I’ve blogged but I wanted to share with yall about something that happened two weeks ago.
One of the ministry things we have been doing is building a church in KIserian. The pastor of this previous church had been hurt in an accident and the church had been closed. When we first got there it was being used as a barn for donkeys. It’s a pretty area, with the Ngong Hills in the background, but the church was surrounded with mounds of dirt and trash. We were able to tear down the church and help to start rebuild it, as well as evangelize and minister to the markets and streets around the area. In Kenya, the kids just walk everywhere by themselves…no joke 5 year olds will come out of nowhere or you see them walking alone by themselves home from school. So being mizungu’s (white people) kids flock to us in large numbers just wanting to be around us. Well one day, Amy Jo and I were playing with Owen (the cutest boy ever) and some of the other kids when we saw a group of 3 boys laying in the grass by us. These boys are Street boys…as in they literally live on the street, they had come to dig in our trash piles and to try and steal our water bottles. We found out they were saying some rude things in Swahili about our group and just the kids so AJ and I went and talked to them. We were getting pretty frustrated with them because they were being really rude, and we were trying to teach them some respect and discipline. When Martin, just looked up at me and says “I’m hungry.” Those two words broke me. But long story longer, we’ve really been able to form relationships with them, they’ve come to church with us, and they have helped us even build the church. I have no idea what will happen with those boys, but I do know how much I love them, how much our team loves them, and even more importantly how much the LORD LOVES THEM! He’s really given me so much compassion for them.
We have also visited lots of schools, orphanages, and churches. We had a really fun 4th of July–although I missed America! I’ve made a list of funnny stories to share with all of you when we are back 🙂 We have been working with Zinduka (a NGO here that works with HIV) and we went to Kibera yesterday.
Family and Friends: I miss you all and love you all!! Can’t wait to see you in only a few more weeks!
