Free Falling

Harness secure… Check. Toes over the edge… Check. Eyes looking straight out in front of me… Check. Now all I have to remember is to breathe…

"Three! Two! One," called the instructor, "JUMP!"

I bend my knees just enough to launch me from the platform. I swing my arms out in front of me as my body lurches forward into the air. I watch as the mountains in the distance start to move upward as I start to fall.

I can't breathe. My stomach feels like it's going to slide up my throat. I think I'm going to throw up…

As I soar into the cool air, my body starts to tip forward. I'm now plunging head-first toward the Nile River. I think I'm going in… I close my eyes and clench my teeth waiting to make contact with the water.

The impact never came. Instead, I'm flung back into the air as my limbs are flailing about. Up and down, side to side, I can't predict where I'm going to go next. I swing and bounce like a fish on a line until the rope slows down and eventually comes to a stop.

My moment of panic is over. I can rest knowing that my harness is secure and the rope is strong. I'm not going to fall into the Nile today!

So many times in my spiritual journey, I live in fear. Fear of failure or embarrassment. I don't take risks because I don't know what the outcome is going to be.

God is calling us all out of our safety zones. He's calling us out of our comforts, and into an adventure with Him. He's asking us to take a leap of faith and trust Him. He is our secure rope, our tight harness. He will never fail us.

Jesus has been calling me out of my safe zone in order to experience more of Him. I need to put my fear and unease aside in order to follow Him wherever he goes. Even if it's a huge jump that seems too big to handle. He's got me. I'm secure. <3
